Rotten Exterior Wood: Repair or Replace?

Soft or crumbling wood deserves a closer look before it is painted. The decision to repair or replace depends on the extent, what the piece does, and why moisture reached it. A neat surface patch cannot establish whether the material behind it is sound.

Separate appearance from function

Decorative trim and structural wood do different jobs. A small defect in trim does not call for the same decision as deterioration in framing or a stair support. Photos help start the discussion, but accessible surrounding material needs assessment.

Find the water path

Discuss roof or gutter leaks, failed joints, water near openings, and places that stay damp. New wood can be damaged again if the source remains. The repair detail and source correction should be planned together.

Consider the extent after removal

Localized replacement may make sense when adjacent pieces are sound. More extensive work may be needed if deterioration continues behind the visible surface. Ask how opened areas and any additional scope will be documented before they are closed.

Prepare for an estimate

Send a wide photo and close-ups, the approximate height, when you noticed it, and whether it returns after repairs. Mention known pest damage separately. Pest evaluation or treatment is different from replacing damaged construction material.
